Last year, the UW men lost a close race to Stanford in the men's eight. The Huskies will look to regain that title this Sunday. And, in the men's single sculls, Ben Davison will attempt to remain the Head of the Head of the Lake after having won that event last year. Among others, he'll face teammate Bram Schwarz. Both of them competed in the double sculls at the World Championships earlier this fall.

"We want to come up with a good, sustainable rhythm in our boats," said UW men's coach Michael Callahan. "After this, we head into a big training segment between now and next March. This is a test of where we are and what we need to work on. We're trying to figure out who the best races are."

Much of the UW women's team's attention will be concentrated in two areas: the eights and the double sculls. In the championship women's eight, the Huskies will face, among others, boats from Pac-12 foes Oregon State and Washington State. Later, most of those same rowers will return to the course in pairs (UW will actually race pairs in the double sculls).

"The eights are going to kick off the day," said UW women's coach Yaz Farooq. "It'll be exciting to get our first look of the year at Oregon State and Washington State."

In the pairs/double sculls event later in the morning, boats that fought a tough, close race last Saturday at the Head of the American will get another chance to square off, along with a number of other UW entries. Last week, Washington boats finished third, fourth and fifth, with just 1.1 seconds separating the three.

"There's some unfinished business with those teams finishing 3-4-5 at the American last week," Farooq said. "Now they'll get to throw down on home water and see who reigns supreme on the Head of the Lake course."
