Former Washington rower
Sarah Dougherty '16 won a championship in the women's four, one of two events in which she's competing at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Rotterdam.
Â
Dougherty (pictured at left among the American four, on the medal stand), an All-American at the UW as a senior in 2016, will also row in the women's eight final on Friday. Thursday morning, she and her U.S. coxless four cruised to a relatively comfortable win over Romania in the A final. The Americans stretched a three-second lead at 1,000 meters to a nearly six-second victory at the finish.
Â
Incoming UW freshman Annamieke Schanze and her German four took fifth place in the same women's four A final.
Â
In the women's quadruple sculls A final, Washington's
Chiara Ondoli and her Italian crew finished fourth in a tight race. Poland's quad led wire-to-wire, with Germany, France and Italy all finishing within about two seconds of the Poles. Italy's fourth was only 25 one-hundredths of a second out of the bronze medal.
Â
In the men's coxed four A final, an all-UW American crew of Rielly Milne, Sean Kelly, Ezra Carlson, Arne Landboe and Sam Pettet finished in sixth place, with New Zealand taking the gold medal.
Â
Earlier Thursday morning, Husky Samuel O'Brien and his partner, Nicholas Montalvo, won the C final in the lightweight double sculls. The American duo trailed Portugal at 1,000 and 1,500 meters, but over the last 500, moved in front and won by 25 hundredths of a second.
Â
In the single sculls B final, American Ben Davison led wire-to-wire to earn a win. Davison crossed the finish line in 6:59.14 seconds, more than four seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Â
In the men's coxless four B final, Husky Luca Lovisolo and his Italian crew finished second, surging from fourth place at the 1,500-meter mark to move past Argentina and the Czech Republic. Canada won the race. In the men's coxed four B final, Sam Goertz and his Canadian crew finished third.
