Four More Huskies Earn Medals At Under-23 Worlds

Pivac, Dougherty and Mantel win gold while Thornton earn a silver.

Three Washington rowers won gold medals and a fourth won silver Friday on the final day of the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Rotterdam.

Viktor Pivac won the men's pair, Michiel Mantel won the men's eight and Sarah Dougherty won her second gold of the regatta in the women's eight, with Husky teammate Anna Thornton taking silver in the same event.

In the men's pair, Pivac, representing Serbia along with partner Martin Mackovic, led wire-to-wire to earn the gold medal. The U.S. and French pairs battled back and forth for the silver and bronze, with the French team earning second spot, but Pivac and Mackovic's time of 6:58.01 was more than one second ahead of the silver medalists in 6:59.44.

Pivac (pictured, on the medal stand, third from right) won the bronze medal in the same event in each of the last two Under-23 World Championships and also in the coxed pair at the 2015 Senior Worlds.

Two Huskies earned medals in the women's eight, including Dougherty, who did double duty in Rotterdam as a member of the United States women's four and women's eight, winning the gold medal in each. Thornton rowed in the Great Britain eight, which finished in the silver medal position.

The U.S. eight, mirroring the dominance of the Americans' senior-level women's eight (winner of 11 straight World Championship and Olympic golds), led throughout the race Friday morning, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field in 6:36.90. Thornton and Great Britain spent most of the 2,000 meters in second place and held off Russia at the end to earn the silver in 6:44.06. Russia was third.

On Thursday, Dougherty, a 2016 UW graduate from Kent, Wash., won the gold medal with the women's four.

In the final race of the U-23 regatta, two Huskies competed in the men's eight: Mantel for the host Netherlands and Guglielmo Carcano for Italy. The Dutch crew thrilled the home crowd with a dominant race, claiming an open-water lead early in the second 1,000 meters. But Great Britain fought back, along with the Ukraine.

The British got back to under a boat-length, but could never catch up with the Dutch as Mantel and his crew rowed to the gold medal in 5:54.10. Great Britain (5:57.26) was second and Germany surged to grab the bronze. Carcano and his Italian eight finished sixth.

The Senior World Championships are also being held in Rotterdam and one final Husky will race for a medal on Saturday as Fiona Gammond '15 and her Great Britain women's four row in an A final at 2:55 a.m. Pacific Time.
