Gammond Wins World Championship In British Four

A great week for Husky alumni in Rotterdam wrapped up with one more gold medal.

Former Washington rower Fiona Gammond '15 won a gold medal in the Great Britain women's four Saturday, wrapping up a strong week for UW alumni at the World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam.

Gammond and her British four won in the senior-level World Championships, which featured an abbreviated list of events with the Olympics having just been contested.

Washington rowers won medals in an additional five events at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships, also held in Rotterdam over the past week alongside the Junior Worlds. Sarah Dougherty '16 won gold in the U.S. four and eight, while sophomore-to-be Anna Thornton earned silver in the women's eight.

On the men's side, junior Viktor Pivac won the men's pair, representing Serbia, while sophomore Michiel Mantel was a member of the Netherlands under-23 men's eight that thrilled the home crowd with a gold-medal performance on Friday.

In the women's four final Saturday, Gammond and her British crew trailed the United States boat at the halfway point, but in the third 500 meters, moved into the lead and then rowed to a five-second victory, winning in 7:16.28.

In terms of international competition for Husky rowers this summer, next up is the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where Danielle Hansen '16 will row in the United States' mixed leg, trunk and arms coxed four. Competition in Rio begins Sept. 9.
