SAN DIEGO – The No. 3-ranked Washington women's rowing team earned a place in the final of all five of its events, based on results of heats and preliminary races at the annual San Diego Crew Classic.

Washington's five crews – the first, second and third varsity eights; varsity four; and novice eight – will all compete for trophies on Sunday on Mission Bay.

In the Huskies' first race of the regatta, Saturday's heat one of the Jessop-Whitter Cup (women's varsity eights), the UW's top crew raced to a win over Washington State and SMU. The Huskies grabbed the lead from the outset and had open water over WSU by 1,000 meters. Washington finished in 6:37.923, about two lengths ahead of the Cougars, with SMU third.

Sunday, the Huskies will race in a six-boat field for the Jessop-Whitter Cup. No. 4-ranked Texas edged No. 7 California in the other heat, ahead of Notre Dame and the University of San Diego.

Next, the UW's varsity four raced in the second heat of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, with rival California in the lane next to the Huskies. Cal took the lead early on, ahead of UW and with Notre Dame not far behind. The two Pac-12 boats pulled away from the field, but the Bears held off a late Husky challenge for the win.

Texas prevailed in the other varsity four heat.

Immediately after that race concluded, Washington's second varsity eight rowed in heat one of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy. The Husky crew dominated that four-boat race, leading from wire-to-wire and finishing with a time of 6:56.050, more than 12 seconds in front of Washington State. Texas beat Cal for the top spot in the other heat.

Finally, the Huskies' novice eight and third varsity eight both raced in a preliminary event for both the Laurel Korholz Perpetual Trophy and the Carley Copley Cup. Washington was the only team to enter a novice (Korholz) crew, meaning the two events were combined into one.

In a relatively close race, Texas finished first, about six seconds ahead of California, and about eight seconds in front of the Husky 3V8+. Washington's novice crew finished in fourth place. Those same seven crews will race again Sunday.

Here is Sunday's schedule:

9:30 a.m. – Varsity 8+: Jessop-Whittier Cup
10:06 a.m. – Varsity 4+: Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup
10:14 a.m. – Second Varsity 8+: Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy
