PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Seven more Huskies, led by Dutch gold medalists Bram Schwarz, Simon van Dorp and Michiel Mantel in the men's eight, earned medals on the final day of the World Rowing Under-23 Championships.

Along with those three, Elise Beuke and Jessica Thoennes took silver in the women's eight, Valentina Iseppi was in the silver-medal boat in the women's double sculls and Viktor Pivic won a bronze in the men's pair.

In all, 21 Huskies, all of whom will return to Seattle for the coming season, rowed in the regatta. Ten of them earned medals in Saturday finals, meaning that the UW athletes will bring home a total of 17 medals.

In the final race of the regatta, the Netherlands men's eight with the three Huskies among its crew won in wire-to-wire fashion, taking the gold medal in a time of 5:29.550. The Dutch men had set a world-best, under-23 time in the heats and retained that kind of speed in the final, beating Romania by just over two seconds. Schwarz, van Dorp and Mantiel all rowed in the Huskies' varsity eight last spring.

In a dramatic women's eight final, Russia led in the early-going, but gave way to the American boat with Beuke and Thoennes at the halfway mark.

However, just after the United States crew had moved into the lead, two-seat rower Claire Collins' seat came off of its tracks, throwing the boat out of rhythm and allowing Canada to take over first. Unable to reattach the seat, Collins rowed the final 750 meters without it and, despite that disadvantage, the U.S. women held off the rest of the field to earn the silver medal.

Iseppi, a sophomore rowing for Italy, and her partner spent most of their women's double sculls final in third position, but in the final 500 meters, the Greek entry which had led throughout, gave way to both Italy and Belarus, which narrowly held of the second-place Italians at the finish, earning the gold by just 15 one-hundreds of a second.

Pivac, rowing for Serbia, earned a medal at Under-23 worlds for the fourth year in a row. The senior from Belgrade and his partner, held the second-place position for most of the 2,000 meters, but the French entry, which had been fourth, caught them at the end. Romania went the entire 2,000 meters in the lead for the gold.

In the men's pair B final, Huskies Alexander Vollmer and Philipp Nonnast finished in fourth place in a competitive race, just six second back of the first-place Dutch. In the B final in the men's eight, Luca Lovisolo and his Italian crew finished fourth in a fast and tightly-packed race.
