SEATTLE – Washington's men's and women's rowing teams won all of the races in which they were entered Sunday in the 39th Head of the Lake regatta. The UW women won both the championship and junior varsity eights, while the men won three different eights races, the championships fours and the championship single sculls, as Ben Davison won that event for the second time.

The races, which start on Lake Union and wind through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut on the way to Union Bay, features  a three-mile race course. There were 43 race categories for juniors, masters and college teams, featuring well over 400 entries in all.

The morning began with the men's collegiate eights, the Ben Porter Cup, with Washington's varsity crew taking first place in a time of 14.38.161, more than a minute ahead of the second-place finisher, Oregon State. In the second race, the men's collegiate JV eights, the UW boat won in a time of 14:46.357, a minute and 20 seconds faster than the University of British Columbia boat that finished in second place.

"The team performed as well as it could have today," UW men's coach Michael Callahan commented, "but this is just the start of a long process. We're slowly adding pieces to the team."

The third race of the day was the championship women's eight, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells. The UW's two entries took the top two spots, with the A boat finishing in 16:21.922 and the B crew posting a time of 16.37.292. Seattle Pacific finished in third place.

"There certainly was high enthusiasm to end the fall season on home waters," UW women's coach Yasmin Farooq. "The team raced aggressively and technically well last week at the Head of the American, so I challenged them to make another step in the seven days since then.

"It's been a really hard week of training and everyone brought their A game today," Farooq concluded.

In the women's collegiate JV eight, the lone Husky entry won in a time of 17:25.520. UBC was second, about 34 seconds behind.

Next was the men's collegiate 3V8+, with three UW entries, which swept the top three spots. Washington's three boats finished with times of 15:06.701, followed by 15:31.789 and 15:32.085, well ahead of the rest of the pack.

Washington entered five crews in the championship men's fours, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells, and took first through fourth and sixth place.

In the final race of the day that included UW athletes, the William Tytus Cup (men's open single sculls), Davison added another sculling trophy to his haul. The winner of the Head of the Charles championship single sculls last month in Boston (and also a winner in the same event at the 2016 Head of the Lake; last year's race was cancelled due to weather), Davison won on Sunday in a time of 18:39.296, beating a field of 16 athletes, including eight Huskies. UW's Simon van Dorp finished in second place with a time of 19:05.696.

"Seattle doesn't disappoint," Callahan said about Sunday morning's conditions. "These were beautiful racing conditions on an autumn day. It doesn't get any better.

"Now we point toward finishing up the fall and winter training," Callahan concluded. "This is where the real hard work starts."

The Head of the Lake marked the end of the fall season for the UW rowers. The women open their spring season next March 2 vs. USC at Lake Las Vegas, while the men and women will both compete in the 118th annual Class Day Regatta next March 23.
