HENLEY-ON-THAMES, U.K. – The Washington men's rowing team won its race in The Temple Challenge Cup on the opening day of the Henley Royal Regatta Tuesday, beating the '91 A.S.R. Nereus "B" crew, from the Netherlands, in a round-of-32 race.

The UW eight, wearing a black band on their racing tanks to commemorate the recent passing of alumnus Jon Runstad '64, was dominant throughout, taking the lead from the start and rowing to a convincing win over the Dutch crew.

The official verdict gave the Husky crew, which features a mix of athletes from the Huskies' top three eights from the spring season, a one-length victory.

Wednesday, the Huskies will take on a crew from Isis Boat Club (U.K.), which beat King's College Queensland (Australia) on Tuesday. That race is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. BST/11:00 a.m. PST.

Also Wednesday, Washington's coxed four will make its debut in the opening round of The Prince Albert Challenge Cup, for college coxed fours. The Huskies will square off with another American four, from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a round-of-16 matchup. That race gets underway at 9:35 a.m. BST/1:35 a.m. PST.
