Husky Four Wins Prince Albert Challenge Cup Quarterfinal Race

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, U.K. – The Washington men's rowing team's coxed four won its Prince Albert Challenge Cup quarterfinal race Thursday morning at Henley Royal Regatta, earning a spot in Friday's semifinals. Meanwhile, a number of UW men's and women's alumni also competed, with several moving through to quarterfinals.
 
Washington's other crew competing at Henley – a men's eight that is vying for The Temple Challenge Cup – had Thursday off and will race in a quarterfinal on Friday. The UW eight will take on Cornell Friday at 8:15 a.m. PT.
 
Thursday, the Husky four competing in The Prince Albert Challenge Cup beat University College Dublin (Ireland) by two lengths, officially, holding the lead for the entire 2,112-meter racecourse. Washington will face Imperial College London in a semifinal Friday at 1:05 a.m. PT. The other semifinal features Oxford Brookes (UK) vs. a crew from Adams House, Harvard (USA).
 
In Thursday races involving UW alumni:
 
Sebastian Ritter '21, competing for 45 Münchener R.C., (GER), beat Cambridge '99 R.C., in a Thames Challenge Cup race (club men's eights), earning a place in the quarterfinals vs. a Thames R.C. entry.
 
Welsh rower Angharad Broughton '23 won her race as a part of a Univ. of London & Leander Club coxless four, beating a crew from Scotland to earn a spot in a quarterfinal vs. a four from Syracuse University. 
 
American Fiona Shields '22, rowing for Thames Rowing Club, won her Wargrave Challenge Cup race, for women's club eights, over a crew from London, also moving through to the quarterfinals, where she'll face another Thames R.C. crew.
 
British rower Holly Dunford '22 and her Molesey R.C. quad, earned a win in its Princess Grace Challenge Cup race, over a Thames R.C. quad, and will move to the quarterfinals to face Shawnigan Lake School (Canada).
 
Abby Adebiyi '23, also competing for Thames R.C., fell to a crew from New Zealand in a round-of-16 Town Challenge Cup race; while Calina Schanze '19, rowing with Danske Studenters Roklub, fell to a U.K. pair in the Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup.

Canadian Steve Rosts '22 (Maple Bay R.C.) will complete for the first time on Saturday, in The Queen Mother Challenge Cup (open M4x), while Great Britain's Jacob Dawson '16 (Leander and Oxford Brookes) and Canadian Will Crothers '09 (Maple Bay R.C.) will square off Sunday in The Grand Challenge Cup (open M8+) final.
