SEATTLE – The Washington women's rowing program enjoyed a dominant performance at the Head of the Lake this Sunday on Lake Washington, highlighted by the first place finish in the women's championship eight race. The Huskies' time of 17:57.547 was seven seconds faster than the second place Washington State Cougars. The Huskies entered two boats in the championship eight, with the other eight finishing in fourth place with a time of 18:20.707.
In total, Washington competed in five different events at the Head of the Lake regatta. Immediately following the championship eight, they competed in the collegiate JV eight where they finished first by over 14 seconds (18:36.317). The Huskies three eights all finished inside the top five times of the day.
"Our efforts have been focused on developing the overall depth and strength of the team," said head coach Yaz Farooq. "That's what it will take in the spring when our NCAA Championship season begins. It was awesome to have a boathouse full of women committed to that—everyone from freshmen in their first race ever to experienced varsity rowers doubling up in eights, fours and pairs."
Some rowers got the opportunity to go out on the water twice on the day, after competing in the eights. Washington had three fours compete in the women's collegiate fours. The Huskies finished on top with a time of 21:57.935, and all three fours placed in the top four of the event.
Washington also entered seven pairs into the women's open doubles. The Huskies finished three boats in the top three, while having all seven boats in the top eight. The winning boat, stroked by B. Pierson, finished with a time of 21:40.944.
It was the first home regatta for new head coach Yaz Farooq, who came to the UW after coaching the Stanford women's rowing team. She enjoyed a dominant day for the Huskies that included five first place finishes.
"For me personally, it was an unbelievably inspirational to experience the support of the Husky Nation," said Farooq. "From the fans at Conibear to everyone cheering alongside the Cut. We are so lucky to have such amazing fans."
To finish off the day, Washington took first place (20:21.609) and second place (21:39.749) in the women's open eight.
The Huskies will begin their 2017 season on Saturday, March 25, with the annual Class day Regatta on the Montlake Cut.
