The finals are set for nearly all of the current and former Washington rowers competing at the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

A total of 13 Huskies remain in contention for medals, with an additional five still competing for a chance to qualify their country for the 2024 Olympics. The 2023 World Championships also serve as the first qualification event for next summer's Paris Games.

SIx Huskies – three each in the men's and women's crews – will race in the eights finals for the United States. The American women, coxed by Nina Castagna '22 and featuring Jessica Thoennes '18 and Brooke Mooney '18, finished first in their heat earlier this week and will race for a medal on Sunday. The top five crews in the eights final will qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

In the men's eight final, Americans Ezra Carlson '16, Chris Carlson '19 and Pieter Quinton '21 will will also vie for a medal and Olympic qualification for the U.S. They'll compete against at least two other UW rowers in that final, as veteran Jacob Dawson '16, who won bronze at the 2020 Olympics, will row in the Great Britain eight, and Gert-Jan van Doorn '22 will row for the Netherlands.

Friday, finals will be set for the last two Huskies whose events' finals have yet to be settled. Simon van Dorp '20, who has posted the fastest time in both the heats and quarterfinals, will race in a men's single sculls semifinal, hoping to earn a spot in the final and, with that, a spot in the 2024 Olympics for the Netherlands.

Canadian's Will Crothers '09 and Joel Cullen '23 will hope to join the five other Huskies in the men's eight grand final. Their crew is one of six in a repechage, from which the top-two finishers will earn a place in the A final, along with the U.S., Great Britain, the Netherlands and Australia.

On Thursday, among a number of races featuring current and former Huskies, American Evan Olson '19 of Bothell, Wash., qualified for the A final in the men's pair with a third-place finish in a semifinal. That's enough to book the Americans a spot in the Paris Games, as the top 11 in the pairs earn Olympic qualification.

Logan Ullrich '23, from New Zealand, also qualified for both the A final and has Kiwi men's four headed to Paris, thanks to a second-place finish in a semifinal.

Germany's Tabea Schendekehl '21 and Italian Valentina Iseppi '19 will meet in the women's quad sculls B final after finishing fifth and sixth in their semis. The top finisher in the B final will earn an Olympics spot.

Italian Aisha Rocek '25 finished sixth in her women's pairs A/B semifinal and will race in the B final on Saturday. The top five of six in that race will earn Olympic qualification. Rocek is also in the Italian women's eight, which will row in a repechage on Friday, needing a top-two finish to reach the A final.

In the women's four semi on Thursday, Ella Cossill '22 and Phoebe Spoors '17 of New Zealand finished fourth to move to B final on Saturday. The winner of that race will also qualify for the Olympics.

Ben Davison '18 won his C/D semifinal on Thursday and will race in the C final Sunday morning.
