Women's Rowing

No. 1-Ranked UW Faces Tough Field At San Diego Crew Classic

SEATTLE – For the first time since 2014, Washington's women's rowing team will compete at the San Diego Crew Classic, this Saturday and Sunday on Mission Bay. The regatta features the top four teams in the nation, based on the latest coaches' poll.

The Huskies will send five boats to the annual regatta: a first, second and third varsity eight, a novice eight and a varsity four. Heats are on Saturday and finals are Sunday. The regatta will feature all four the nation's top-four programs as the No. 1-ranked Huskies (UW moved into the No. 1 spot this week after having been No. 2 in this year's three previous polls) are joined by No. 2 Cal, No. 3 Stanford and No. 4 Texas, among many others.

"We really appreciate the invitation to participate in the Jessop-Whittier Cup," UW head coach Yasmin Farooq, whose first varsity trip as a coxswain at Wisconsin was to the Crew Classic, said. "That inspired us to bring our entire Pac-12 squad. There is going to be excellent competition in all of those events and I can't think of a better way to start the season.

"As an athlete I remember it feeling like spring and the Championship season had officially begun when you got to the Crew Classic," she added. "It's a really festive atmosphere with strong teams coming from all over the country this year. I think the fans are going to be treated to some exciting racing."

In their last appearance in San Diego in 2014, the UW women finished second in the grand final in both the Jessop-Whittier Cup (women's varsity eight) and in the second varsity eight.

About Washington Rowing
Rowing at University of Washington was established in 1901 with support from the local business community. In 1903, Washington entered its first intercollegiate race and defeated California, starting their storied "Cal Dual" rivalry. From this beginning, UW crews became the champions in the nation, winning the Gold Medal in the Olympics in 1936 as described in the New York Times bestseller The Boys in the Boat. UW has continued its tradition of winning championships and Olympic medals, and today is one of the best university rowing programs in the world. With its state-of-the-art training facility located on the UW campus right on the shores of Lake Washington, surrounded by mountains and in close proximity to the iconic Montlake Cut, Washington Rowing attracts the best men and women student-athletes from the Pacific Northwest and around the world.
