PARIS – Washington alumni Logan Ullrich '25 and Phoebe Spoors '17 earned medals in the men's and women's fours Thursday morning at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Ullrich (silver) and Spoors (bronze), both rowing for New Zealand, were the second and third Huskies to earn a medal at this year's Games, following German Tabea Schendekehl '20, who won bronze in the women's quad on Wednesday.
Over the next two days, 11 more Huskies will row for medals in the final two days of the regatta. Of the 16 current and former UW rowers at the Paris Games, 15 have earned a berth in an A final, where places 1-6 are awarded.
Ullrich, an All-America rower at UW in 2023 who will return to UW this coming school year, and his Kiwi four, finished a deck-length behind the United States four, which won gold. Those two crews held first and second for nearly all of the 2,000 meters, in that order.
One race prior, Spoors, who rowed in UW's historic sweep of the 2017 NCAA Championships, added to a terrific day for New Zealand, earning the bronze medal in the women's four. Fifth at 500 meters, the Kiwis moved into third by 1,000 and held it the remainder of the race.
Earlier in the day, Spoors' older sister, Lucy, won the gold medal in the women's double.
In the men's double sculls final, American Ben Davison '18 and his crewmate finished in fourth place, finishing less than two seconds back of bronze medalist Ireland. Davison's double had passed both the 1,000- and 1,500-meter buoys in third position.
Also Thursday, four UW alumni passed tests to earn places in A finals in the days ahead.
In a men's single sculls A/B semifinal, Simon van Dorp '20 of the Netherlands won his race in wire-to-wire fashion, and will head to Saturday's A final among the favorites.
In the men's eight repechage, with four of five entrants moving on to the medal round, Dutchman Gert-Jan van Doorn '21 and his crew earned a win. In the women's eight rep, American coxswain Nina Castagna '22 guided her crew to a win, while Aisha Rocek '25 and Italy finished fourth, good enough to advance.
All three of those athletes will join other Huskies in A finals on Saturday. In the men's eight race, Chris Carlson '18, Rielly Milne '18, Evan Olson '19, and Pieter Quinton '21 will row for the United States, in a crew coached by UW men's head coach
Michael Callahan '96. They'll be joined by 2020 bronze medalist Jacob Dawson '16, competing for Great Britain. Both of those crews won heats.
In the women's eight final, Castagna and Rocek will face off with a Great Britain eight (among others), which includes UW alumna Holly Dunford '22, who won a heat earlier in the week to advance directly to the final.
First, however, on Friday, alum Jessica Thoennes '18 and her American partner will row for a medal in the women's pair final, the only race on Friday that will feature a former Husky.
