Eighty years after their legendary feat, recognition for Washington Rowing's 1936 eight-oared crew continues to come. Tonight, the Pac-12 Conference honored "The Boys In The Boat" as the conference's Varsity Eight of the Century.
The Pac-12 All-Century Rowing teams were announced tonight as part of a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of what is now the Pac-12 Conference.
Along with the '36 crew, which won Olympic Gold in Berlin, eight former Huskies (including three members of that 1936 crew) were named to the Pac-12 Men's Rowing All-Century Team: Dave Calder (1998-2001), Will Crothers (2006-09), Matt Deakin (2000-02), Don Hume (1936-38), Conlin McCabe (2009-13), Bob Moch (1935-36), Rob Munn (2009-12) and Joe Rantz (1935-37).
Washington's 1936 varsity eight (cox - Bob Moch, stroke - Don Hume, 7 - Joe Rantz, 6 - George Hunt, 5 - Jim McMillan, 4 - John White, 3 - Gordon Adam, 2 - Charles Day, bow - Roger Morris; coached by Al Ulbrickson), already legendary for many years in Seattle, earned renewed worldwide acclaim after the 2013 publication of Daniel James Brown's book, "The Boys in the Boat," which spent two years on the New York Times Bestsellers list.
That team, made up of student-athletes from blue-collar backgrounds and raised in the Great Depression, went east to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships and won the national title against California and several strong Ivy League programs. From there, the Husky crew earned the right to represent the United States at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. In front of a huge crowd that included Adolf Hitler, the Husky boys edged Axis powers Germany and Italy by the narrowest of margins, to win the Gold Medal.
That '36 group was inducted into the Huskies Hall of Fame in 1980, the second year of the Hall's existence.
Three members of that crew – Hume, Rantz and Moch – were also named to the All-Century team. Here's a look at the eight Huskies honored:
Canadian
Dave Calder (1998-2001) won an Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championship in the freshman eight in 1997 and, along with an accomplished college career, went on to compete in four Olympics with the Canadian team, winning a silver medal in the coxless pair in 2008. He also won a World Championship in the eight in 2003 and rowed in six different World Championship regattas.
Will Crothers (2006-09) is another Canadian standout who won three IRA championships as a Husky, including varsity eight titles in 2008 and 2009. After his college career, he won a silver medal in the men's eight at the 2012 Olympic Games. He's also won gold, silver and bronze at World Championship, winning in the coxless four in 2015.
Matt Deakin (2000-02) served as Husky team captain as a senior in 2002 before embarking on a successful career as a U.S. rower. He won a gold medal in the men's eight at the 2004 Olympics, to go along with golds in the coxed four at the 2003 and 2007 World Championships, as well as in the eight at the 2005 Worlds.
Don Hume (1936-38) rowed in the stroke seat in the Huskies' legendary 1936 crew that won the IRA and then Olympic gold in Berlin. Ill in the days leading up to the Olympic final, legend holds that Hume nearly passed out in the boat before leading the U.S. across the finish line. He also won an IRA championship in the freshman eight in 1935 and is enshrined in the National Rowing and Husky Halls of Fame.
Conlin McCabe (2009-13) is another Husky who has achieved at the highest level both as a Husky and with Canada. A three-time all-conference rower at the UW, McCabe took the 2012 college season off to row for Canada in the Olympics, where he rowed to a silver in the men's eight. At the UW, he won IRA championships in the 2011 and 2013 varsity eights, along with the freshman eights crown in 2009.
Bob Moch (1935-36) was the coxswain of the Huskies' 1936 IRA and Olympic champion crew. He also won an IRA championship in the junior varsity eight in 1935 and, along with his crew, was inducted into both the National Rowing and Husky Halls of Fame.
Rob Munn (2010-12), from Redmond, Wash., won four IRA championships at Washington, winning in the freshman eight in 2009, the second eight in 2010 and 2011 and in the varsity eight as a senior in 2012. A three-time Academic all-conference selection and the UW's 2012 Male Athlete of the Year, he will row in the United States eight later this month in Switzerland in an attempt to qualify that boat for the 2016 Olympics. He's won gold twice at the U-23 World Championships and finished fourth in the U.S. eight at the senior Worlds in 2014.
Joe Rantz (1935-37) was the primary source for and the main focus of the book, "The Boys in the Boat." As the seven-seat in the Huskies' varsity eight, he helped lead the 1936 crew to an IRA title and Olympic gold. He also won an IRA championship in the freshman boat in 1934 and, along with his boatmates, is a member of the National Rowing Hall of Fame and the Husky Hall of Fame.
