Washington alumna and veteran U.S. para-rower
Danielle Hansen '17 won both a gold and a silver medal while former UW men's team captain Jacob Dawson '16 won bronze in the men's four Saturday in the next-to-last day of the 2018 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Â
In the para-rowing mixed coxed four, Great Britain maintained its historic dominance, winning the gold medal in an event they've won every year since 2012. The American four, which won silver at the 2016 Paralymics and the 2017 World Championships with Hansen on board, rowed stroke for stroke with the Brits through the first half of the race, with the U.S. leading at 1,000 meters. Just past that milestone, however, the British crew moved in front, though only by the most narrow of margins.
Â
In the final 500 meters, the British crew steadily built on its lead and won by half a length. Hansen and the Americans took the silver medal while France were a comfortable third. Hansen's silver medal at the World Championships was the fourth of her career, to go along with her Olympic silver in 2016.
Â
Hansen also rowed in the para-rowing women's pair. Due to other teams' withdrawals in that event, Hansen's pair rowed in the C final of the women's pair. Hansen and her partner, Jaclyn Smith, rowed a world-best time of 7:39.30 to earn the gold medal.
Â
Two Huskies raced in the men's four A final as Bram Schwarz '20 stroked the Netherlands four. Dawson rowed in the two seat in the GB four.
Â
In that final, as the field moved through 1,000 meters, the favored Australians had taken command of first place, but the fight for silver and bronze was tight as the Dutch, Germans and Romanians were tightly packed for second through fourth.
Â
However, over the third 500 meters, it was Italy and Great Britain who made strong moves, passing those other three into the medal places. As they came to the line, the Italians nearly caught the Aussies, but finished 25 hundredths of a second back. Dawson's British crew took the bronze, a little over a second faster than Schwarz and the Dutch four, who finished fourth.
Â
Also on Saturday, three other UW women's rowers competed in B finals. In the women's four,
Phoebe Spoors '17 and her New Zealand crew finished in third place in the B final. In the women's quad sculls, both
Carmela Pappalardo '20 and
Chiara Ondoli '18 were in the Italian shell that finished sixth in the B final.
Â
Sunday, the regatta comes to a close with a long schedule of finals. Huskies will row for medals in the women's eight and the women's double sculls, while several others will perform in B and C finals.
