The Washington men's rowing team takes on Pac-12 rivals Stanford and Oregon State in a pair of duals this Saturday morning, April 7, on Montlake Cut.

After a varsity four race against Oregon State at 7:45 a.m., the Huskies will face Stanford in three races before quickly turning around to take on the Beavers in three more, all on Saturday morning.

Washington will have several entries in the V4+ and 3V8+/F8+ and the lineups will have some changes between the races vs. the Cardinal and the Beavers.

"It's always great to be able to compete against Pac-12 programs," UW head coach Michael Callahan said. "This Saturday is kind of like a doubleheader in baseball with different pitchers in each game. We'll change the lineups between races and see what works best. It'll be a challenge for our team to row two races in a short period of time, and it will give the coaches a lot of great information to evaluate."

THE ANDREA AND EVERETT PETER PAUP CUP vs. STANFORD
Last year, Washington and Stanford agreed to the establishment of the Andrea and Everett Peter Paup Cup, named in honor of former UW and Stanford coxswain Pete Paup, a U.S. Marine veteran who finished second in the coxed pair at the 1956 U.S. Olympic Trials and went on to become chairman and president of Manson Construction Company.

Last year in Redwood Shores, the Huskies won all three races against the Cardinal as part of the Stanford Invitational (UW also rowed against Wisconsin the day before). Washington won in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight/freshman eight race.

In 2017, the Cardinal finished third in the Pac-12 men's varsity eight grand final and fourth in the overall championship points standings.

vs. OREGON STATE
The Huskies and Oregon State, given their geographical proximity and membership in the Pac-12, are frequent men's rowing foes.

Last season, the Huskies squared off with the Beavers on Dexter Lake in Oregon and won all of the races: varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight/freshman eight and varsity four.

The Beavers finished third overall at the Pac-12 Championships last season.

ABOUT WASHINGTON ROWING
Rowing at University of Washington was established in 1901 with support from the local business community. In 1903, Washington entered its first intercollegiate race and defeated California, starting their storied "Cal Dual" rivalry. From this beginning, UW crews became the champions in the nation, winning the Gold Medal in the Olympics in 1936 as described in the New York Times bestseller The Boys in the Boat. UW has continued its tradition of winning championships and Olympic medals, and today is one of the best university rowing programs in the world. With its state-of-the-art training facility located on the UW campus right on the shores of Lake Washington, surrounded by mountains and in close proximity to the iconic Montlake Cut, Washington Rowing attracts the best men and women student-athletes from the Pacific Northwest and around the world.
