The 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships got underway in Poznan, Poland, Wednesday, and three Huskies saw action in the men's single sculls, quadruple sculls and the four.

U.S. veteran Ben Davison led from wire-to-wire to win his heat in the men's single sculls. Davison, who was competing in his fifth Under-23 World regatta, finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:12.910, nearly nine seconds ahead of the Russian sculler in second place. Davison will next row in a quarterfinal on Friday.

Washington's Chase Deitner and his U.S. teammates, competing in the first of three heats in the men's lightweight quad sculls, earned a victory to advance directly to the A final. The American boat sat third at 500 meters and second at 1,000, but passed the Irish shell in the second half and led the rest of the way. The U.S. boat finished in 6:00.180, more than three seconds ahead of second-place France. The U.S. quad will wait until Saturday before rowing in the A final at 7:50 a.m. PDT that day.

In the third of three heats of the men's four (and the last event of the day involving a UW rower), Elijah Maesner and his U.S. crew rowed to a second-place finish, earning a direct path into the A/B semifinal and avoiding a repechage. The American crew led most of the way before Germany passed them in the final portion of the race. The Germany four finished in 6:11.66, with the U.S. crossing the line in 6:13.03.

Maesner and his crew will next race in an A/B semifinal on Saturday.

Thursday, a large group of Huskies will get their competitions underway as the heats for the women's double sculls, men's quad sculls, and men's and women's eights heats get started. Washington's women are representing three countries in the double sculls and two in the eights. Washington's men have one participant in the quad sculls and a total of eight more, rowing for three countries in the eights.
