SARASOTA, Fla. – The third-ranked Washington women's rowing team won all eight of its races Friday on day one of the Big Ten Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park.
The first day of the two-day regatta featured two rounds of races for the four UW crews in attendance. In the morning, Washington faced Iowa, Notre Dame, Penn, Indiana and Clemson in the first and second varsity fours, and the first and second varsity eights.
In the afternoon, those same four boats took on Miami, Ohio State, Brown, Duke and Wisconsin. Washington was the only one of the 23 teams at the regatta to win both of its races In each of those four race categories on Friday. The Huskies' time in their afternoon varsity eights race was the fastest of the entire day.
The Huskies opened the morning in the second varsity four, where the Husky crew took a full-length lead over the field inside the first 100 meters. That crew rowed well in front for the full 2,000 meters and won the race in 7:22.945, more than nine seconds in front of second-place Penn.
The first varsity fours races was a repeat, at least for the Huskies, who grabbed a big, early lead and never faced a challenge throughout the race. UW's four won the race in 7:13.243, just over 10 seconds ahead of Penn.
In the second varsity eights race, Pennsylvania gave the UW crew a good fight from the starting docks, taking a deck-length lead over the Huskies early on. The Quakers' edge didn't last, however, as Washington moved in front around the 500-meter mark, and then UW took off, earning an open-water lead by the midway point.
The Huskies won the 2V8+ race in 6:26.329, about two lengths of open water over Penn.
In the morning session's varsity eights race, it was Indiana that gave the Dawgs the biggest threat, holding on to contact through the first half of the race. In the second half, however, Washington took command and won by about a length and a half of open water, in 6:17.285. The Hoosiers were nearly seven seconds back.
The same four crews returned in the afternoon for one more race each, against a different field of competitors.
In the second fours race, UW was challenged by Brown in the opening portion of the race, but crept into a clear lead by 500 meters. At 1,000 meters, UW had open water on the other five shells, but Duke made a move to take over second place.
UW kept up the pace, however, and won with a time of 7:15.401, with Duke beating Brown for second by four tenths of a second.
The first varsity four followed with another comfortable victory, taking a big lead early on and maintaining it throughout the 2,000 meters. The first four won its race in a time of
In the second varsity eight, it was Brown that grabbed the early lead, but the Huskies were able to move past the Ivy Leaguers by 750 meters, with a strong move from the UW eight quickly moving its bow in front and establishing an open-water edge.
The Huskies' 2V8+ won with a final time of 6:25.587, about 5.5 seconds and a half-length of open water ahead of Brown.
Washington wrapped up its day with a win in its afternoon varsity eights race. Once again, the Huskies gained an open-water lead over the field by 1,000 meters and had a comfortable row to the finish.
