UW Wins Five Of Six; Thru To All A Finals At Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO – The No. 5-ranked Washington women's rowing team won five of six races and saw all seven crews advance to Sunday A finals during the first day of action Saturday at the San Diego Crew Classic.

Sunday, the Huskies will race for trophies in six different race categories, with two crews competing in the second fours event.

The Huskies won their heats in the first and second women's eight, varsity four, and novice eights, while taking first and second in the second varsity fours.

Washington opened the morning with a heat in the Jessop/Whittier Cup, for varsity eights. The Huskies' heat included rival California, and it was those two crews that went to the front at the start.

The Huskies pulled away for a comfortable win, finishing in 6:14.383, nearly six seconds in front of the Golden Bears.

At the start of the Huskies' varsity four heat, the Huskies moved in front alongside Cal and UCLA. Soon enough, UW and Cal pulled away, running neck and neck in the second 500. The Huskies pulled away in final after 1,000 meters and won the race comfortably. UW's time was 7:13.667, nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place California

Washington also raced vs. California in the second varsity eights, with those two running neck-and-neck most of the way. The Huskies won the heat in 6:27.682, a length in front of the Cal crew.

In the women's B fours (second varsity fours), two Washington crews competed in the same heat alongside three other boats. The two UW crews battled one another throughout, leaving the rest of the field well behind. In the end, the Husky crew in lane three won, in 7:23.022, more than a length ahead of the boat in lane one (7:27.084).

In the women's novice preliminary race (all boats through to the final), Washington had to make an impressive comeback to beat USC to the finish line. The Huskies didn't take the lead until the final few strokes and won in 6:56.428, less than three-tenths of a second in front of the Women of Troy.

Washington's final race of the day was also a preliminary, in the Carley Copley Cup for open eights. In that one, Texas was the leader for the majority of the race, leaving UW and Cal to battle for second. The Huskies put on a terrific sprint, but crossed the finish in third place. Texas was first, in 6:34.843, with Cal second (6:40.023), sixth-tenths ahead of UW (6:40.853).

Sunday, the Huskies will compete in the sixth finals. Here is that schedule:
