Washington won all of its races Sunday at the 38th annual Head of the Lake regatta, but the majority of the schedule was canceled due to the cold conditions on the water.
Only 10 of the 70 scheduled events were completed. The majority of the collegiate eights races were finished, as well as two junior and two under-17 eights, but none of the fours, doubles, and singles events were contested.
On the men's side, Washington took top spot in the men's collegiate eight and junior varsity eight and finished first, second and third in the third eights.
In the first race of the morning, the Huskies' top boat finished the three-mile course from Lake Union, through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut and into Union Bay, in a time of 14:54.175, about 37 seconds ahead of a Stanford eight. The JV8 result was similar, as Washington's entry completed the race in 15:23.564, 55 seconds in front of Stanford.
In the men's 3V8+, the Huskies had the top-three finishers (the Huskies' third varsity boat followed by two freshman boats), with a crew from Oregon State finishing fourth.
"We got our top boats out on the water and they had a good race," UW men's coach
Michael Callahan said. "We definitely made an improvement from the Head of the Charles. What we wanted to achieve was to row longer in the water and we did that. We challenged the guys to perform their best on race day."
The Washington women finished first and second in the championship women's eight and earned first and third places in the collegiate JV eight.
In the championship eight, Washington's two entries finished in 17:13.861 and 17:16.420, while the Washington State eight took third place. In the JV race, one Husky boat took first in 17:38.009, while WSU (17:46.822) took second ahead of the other UW crew (18:38.002).
"Before the races, I told them that Mother Nature can throw anything at you, and you have to be ready to race in extreme conditions," women's coach Yaz Farooq said. "In Sarasota [site of the NCAA Championships next spring], it's going to be hot and humid. Embrace the extremes."
The start of the regatta was delayed about 25 minutes due to commercial maritime traffic in the ship canal. After 10 races, the referees determined that the conditions were too inclement to complete the schedule.
The Head of the Lake marked the final, scheduled event for the Washington rowing teams this fall. Now, the crews will train in anticipation for the 2018 season, which starts with the 117th annual Class Day next March 24.
