UW's Two Crews Each Win Third Straight Race At Henley

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, U.K. – Both Washington men's crews won their third consecutive race Friday at Henley Royal Regatta, as the Husky coxed four advanced to The Prince Albert Challenge Cup final and the UW eight earned a spot in The Temple Challenge Cup semifinals.

In the second of the 81 races that were contested Friday on the Thames, Washington's four won its semifinal over a crew from Imperial College London, utilizing a very strong start to take control of the race nearly immediately.

After a day off Saturday, the four will take on Oxford Brookes in The Prince Albert Challenge Cup final Sunday (time TBD). Washington has won the Prince Albert once before, in 2015.

Later in the afternoon, Washington's eight took on a crew from Cornell in a Temple Challenge Cup quarterfinal. Much like the four, the UW eight grabbed the lead from the start and was comfortably in front for the entire 2,112 meters, winning by two-and-a-half lengths.

Saturday, the Huskies will take on the Oxford Brookes University "A" entry in a semifinal at 6:20 a.m. PT. The other semifinal features Oxford Brookes "B" vs. Syracuse University.

Along with the two Washington crews, a long list of UW alumni competed in a variety of other races on Friday, with most of them finding success and advancing. Here's a rundown of those races:

Three current or former UW oarsmen earned places in The Ladies' Challenge Plate (M8+) semifinals, with three separate quarterfinal victories on Friday. Evan Olson '19, racing in the Oxford Brookes University "A" crew; Peter Lancashire '21, competing for Leander Club; and Robert Pluijmert '24, in a Dutch National Team crew racing as Hollandia Roeiclub, all won their quarterfinal races.

Saturday, Pluijmert and Lancashire will go head-to-head in one semifinal, while Olson's Oxford Brookes eight takes on a different Dutch crew in the other.

Welsh rower Angharad Broughton '23 won her Town Challenge Cup race as a part of a Univ. of London & Leander Club coxless four, beating a crew from Syracuse University to move on to the semifinals. Broughton's crew will face an entry from Leander Club & Imperial College London in the semis.

In her Henley debut after a first-round bye, Isabel van Opzeeland '23, representing Hollandia Roeiclub, won her Stonor Challenge Cup race vs. a British double. She'll face another British entry, from Twickenham Rowing Club, in a Saturday semifinal.

Austrian Mattijs Holler '22, bow seat in a Leander Club coxless four, got a tough challenge from Syracuse, but won its Visitors Challenge Cup quarterfinal. Holler will move on to the semis where a four from Princeton University awaits.

In the next-to-last race of the day Friday, UW alumni and Canadians Jack Walkey '23 and Joel Cullen '23, rowing for Maple Bay R.C., competed with a pair from Cambridge University in a Silver Goblets & Nickalls' Challenge Cup quarterfinal race. The two members of the '23 UW varsity eight won a comfortable victory, beating the Brits by three and a half lengths. They'll face a Dutch pair in the semifinals Saturday.

British rower Holly Dunford '22 and her Molesey R.C. quad fell to a Canadian National Team crew, racing as Shawnigan Lake School, in a Princess Grace Challenge Cup quarterfinal.

American Fiona Shields '22, rowing in the Thames Rowing Club "C" crew, led at the halfway point, but nonetheless fell to the Thames R.C. "B" entry, in a Wargrave Challenge Cup quarterfinal.

Sebastian Ritter '21, competing for 45 Münchener R.C., (GER), fell to a Thames Rowing Club crew in a Thames Challenge Cup semifinal.
