UW Men's Rowing Set For Head of the Lake

SEATTLE - The Washington men's rowing program will compete at the Head of the Lake this Sunday, Nov. 6 on the Huskies' home waters. The three-mile course starts in Lake Union, crosses Portage Bay, runs through the Montlake Cut and finishes in Lake Washington. Racing will begin at 8:00 a.m. PT.

The Head of the Lake is co-hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club and Washington Rowing.  It is Seattle's premier fall rowing event. This year's field includes Stanford, Washington State, Oregon, and Oregon State, as well as many other Pacific Northwest and Canadian universities.

The UW men will be competing in eight different events on Sunday, starting with the men's collegiate eight at 8:00 a.m. PT.  Athletes earned spots in the eights through their performance in a weekly inter-squad coxless pair race nicknamed the LPR (Long Pair Race).

Many of the rowers will get a chance to compete twice on the day, with ten racing in the men's singles, for the opportunity to be crowned the "Head of the Lake" – the top rower on the lake.

"The team has put a lot of hard work in so far this fall and I think the team is beginning to show signs of an elite work ethic and approach," said head coach Michael Callahan.  "We're excited to show it."

Washington will enter one boat in the collegiate junior varsity eights at 8:03 a.m. and two boats the collegiate third varsity eights at 8:13 a.m.

The Huskies also have four boats competing in the championship fours at 10:00 a.m. and six boats in the open doubles at 11:00 a.m. The UW men will finish off the day with the open eights at 11:40 a.m. where they will enter three boats.

Many UW rowing alumni will also be competing, as rowing clubs from throughout the area will be participating.

UW is coming off a strong showing at the Head of the Charles in Boston on Sunday, October 23, as they won the men's championship eight. Their victory marked the fourth time they have won the championship eight event at the Head of the Charles in eight years.
