Thanks to the generosity of alumni, donors, parents, and friends, our teams were able to achieve remarkable success, including the men’s sweep at the IRA National Championship, the women’s fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championship, and the Huskies best-ever performance at an Olympic Games. As the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve, sustaining this level of excellence requires continuous support from our community. Rowing at University of Washington was established in 1901 with support from the local business community. In 1903, Washington entered its first intercollegiate race and defeated California, starting their storied “Cal Dual” rivalry.
From this beginning, UW crews became the champions in the nation, winning the gold medal in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin as described in the New York Times bestseller The Boys in the Boat. UW has continued its tradition of winning championships and Olympic medals, and today is one of the best university rowing programs in the world thanks to the support of alumni, the Washington Rowing Stewards and the local community.
With its state-of-the-art training facility located on the UW campus right on the shores of Lake Washington, surrounded by mountains and in close proximity to the iconic Montlake Cut, Washington Rowing attracts the best men and women student-athletes from the Pacific Northwest and around the world.

The No. 1-ranked Washington men’s rowing team held off a late challenge from New Zealand to retain the Windermere Cup Saturday on Montlake Cut, wrapping up a clean sweep of races at the Windermere Cup & Opening Day Regatta.
The Washington women’s varsity eight won its 28th Windermere Cup and the Huskies swept all six women’s collegiate events Saturday at the Windermere Cup/Opening Day Regatta on Montlake Cut.
Washington Rowing, along with Windermere Real Estate, welcomes men’s and women’s crews from the New Zealand National Team and the Indiana University for the 39th annual Windermere Cup, this Saturday, May 3, 2025. New Zealand is sending men’s and women’s crews to compete in the Windermere Cup races, while Indiana’s women’s program will compete in the women’s Windermere and Cascade (second varsity eights) Cups, as well as the varsity four and second varsity four events.
