Thanks to the generosity of alumni, donors, parents, and friends, our teams were able to achieve remarkable success, including the men’s sweep at the IRA National Championship, the women’s fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championship, and the Huskies best-ever performance at an Olympic Games. As the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve, sustaining this level of excellence requires continuous support from our community. Rowing at University of Washington was established in 1901 with support from the local business community. In 1903, Washington entered its first intercollegiate race and defeated California, starting their storied “Cal Dual” rivalry.
From this beginning, UW crews became the champions in the nation, winning the gold medal in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin as described in the New York Times bestseller The Boys in the Boat. UW has continued its tradition of winning championships and Olympic medals, and today is one of the best university rowing programs in the world thanks to the support of alumni, the Washington Rowing Stewards and the local community.
With its state-of-the-art training facility located on the UW campus right on the shores of Lake Washington, surrounded by mountains and in close proximity to the iconic Montlake Cut, Washington Rowing attracts the best men and women student-athletes from the Pacific Northwest and around the world.

The No. 2-ranked Washington men’s rowing team will send three crews to Vancouver (Wash.) Lake this Saturday to take on No. 22 Oregon State in a dual regatta. The dual will feature just two races – one in eights and one in fours – with multiple crews from both UW and Oregon State in each race, and with many of the rowers competing both in an eight and then in a four.
The No. 1 Washington men’s rowing team won all three of its races Saturday morning at Redwood Shores, beating Stanford in the first and second varsity eights, and Wisconsin in the third varsity eight.
The No. 1-ranked Washington men’s rowing team travels south to Redwood City, Calif., to take on No. 11 Stanford for the Andrea and Everett Peter Paup Cup this Saturday morning. The Huskies will row in the varsity eight and second varsity eight vs. the Cardinal, and also race head-to-head vs. Wisconsin in the third varsity eight, on the Redwood Shores racecourse.
