The University of Washington will once again be the primary development site for the United States Men ‘s National (Under-23) Rowing Team this summer.
The US Under-23 team is made up of the top 18 collegiate rowers in the nation and will be coached by UW men’s head rowing coach Michael Callahan.
Athletes come from all parts of the country and will live in Seattle while they train. Each athlete will need a room and a bed while in Seattle from June 10-July 15. Host families are not required to provide food, although we know the rowers would appreciate it. Like exchange student experiences, many previous host families have kept in touch with their athletes after they leave for competition, and even into following years as these athletes pursue Olympic dreams.
Lake Washington Rowing Club, founded in the late 1950s, sought to create a platform for continued development for post-collegiate rowers.Ted Frost, captain of the 1954 UW crew, explained, “After four years, a college oarsman has just reached his prime. We have provided no means of keeping oarsmen in competition in an area which is the natural place to furnish this country’s best rowers for international events.”
By serving as the U-23 selection camp site and a USRowing development center, we are bridging the past to the future-providing aspiring National Team and Olympic caliber athletes a platform for continued development.
