A foot. Sixty-nine thousandths of a second. That was the difference as the Washington men’s rowing team fell agonizingly short of regaining the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championship regatta Sunday at Lake Natoma.
Washington men’s rowing saw all four boats move on to the grand finals at the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships. Saturday on Lake Natoma, the Huskies’ first, second, and third varsity eights, and the varsity four, all advanced to the grand finals by virtue of winning their semifinal races.
The Washington women’s rowing team became the first program in the 21-year history of the NCAA Rowing Championship to sweep all three grand finals, earning the Huskies their fourth NCAA rowing title Sunday at Mercer Lake.
Both the UW men’s and women’s rowing teams took home the Pac-12 Championships on Lake Natoma in dominating fashion. It was the first time in 20 years that both the men’s and women’s teams won the Pac-12 Championships the same year.
The sun was shining and so were the Huskies, as both the men’s and women’s varsity eights set Montlake Cut 2,000 meter course records to claim the Windermere Cup over the men’s and women’s Shanghai High-Performance rowing teams. Washington also took home the Erickson Cascade Cup in the men’s and women’s races with open-water victories.
The No. 1-ranked Washington women’s rowing team brought home the Apple Cup for the seventh consecutive year, as the Huskies swept all six races against No. 14-ranked Washington State on the Snake River Saturday morning.
